About Profile of Dr. Humaira Awais Shahid:

Dr. Humaira Awais Shahid’s work is deeply rooted in questions of economic justice and reform, particularly through the lens of Muʿāmalāt—the Islamic framework governing financial transactions and socio-economic relations. Her legislative and advocacy efforts, especially in combating usury and promoting alternative financial systems, reflect a commitment to ethical commerce, fair exchange, and protecting vulnerable communities from exploitative practices. She contributes to a broader discourse that seeks to develop economic models grounded in justice (ʿadl), transparency, and real value creation in line with Islamic principles.

Her intellectual and policy contributions emphasize the need to rethink conventional financial systems and explore models based on Islamic economic ethics. She connects socio-economic reform, poverty alleviation, and women’s economic empowerment with the holistic vision of Muʿāmalāt, which not only governs trade and contracts but also the moral foundations of wealth distribution and market behavior. Through her work, she advances discussions on building more equitable, sustainable, and socially responsible economic structures.

Dr. Shahid is a distinguished scholar, lawmaker, and leadership expert who has served two terms as a provincial legislator in the Punjab Assembly of Pakistan. Her work spans leadership development, economic empowerment, human rights, media strategy, and international advocacy. She has extensive experience in lobbying, training, and policymaking, with a particular focus on women’s development and leadership. Her current initiatives include empowering women through self-understanding and personal transformation to become effective leaders and entrepreneurs.

Internationally, she has played a significant role in advocacy and policy, notably as a lead advocate for the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA), engaging with global coalitions and testifying before the U.S. Congress. Her legislative achievements include pioneering the Punjab Private Money Lending Act (2007), which targeted exploitative lending practices and inspired similar laws in other provinces. She has also been a strong voice against gender-based violence and harmful cultural practices, while promoting women’s legal and economic rights within an Islamic framework.

Her academic and professional background includes a fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University, where she researched violence against women in developing contexts. She also has a strong media career, having served as editor and director within major Pakistani media organizations, with expertise in media policy, communications strategy, and public narrative building. In addition, her work extends to geopolitics and global development, particularly in relation to the Belt and Road Initiative and economic integration across Asia and Europe.

Dr. Shahid is an accomplished author and speaker, with her memoir Devotion and Defiance receiving international recognition. She has been honored with an honorary doctorate from Bowdoin College and has spoken at leading global institutions, including Harvard, MIT, and the University of Washington. Her multidisciplinary work continues to bridge Islamic economic thought, policy reform, and global advocacy, making her a prominent voice in contemporary discussions on justice, leadership, and socio-economic transformation.
