Book chapter: The Halal-ESG Nexus: Building Ethical and Sustainable Value Chains

book

All glory belongs to my Creator—Allah (SWT). I am a co-author of what is likely the first book on the Islamic Circular Economy, the Halal ESG Handbook.

My book chapter entitled: The Halal-ESG Nexus: Building Ethical and Sustainable Value Chains.

This opportunity came only through Allah’s will. A respected professor—who was also my guest – my podcast on the GLobal Halal Shura Hub—opened the door for me. The other authors are all well-known figures with established reputations, so I do not take this lightly. All credit truly belongs to Allah (SWT).

I am incredibly motivated to complete what I call the mother of all books—my own work which, In shā’ Allāh, will change how people think about business: “Think Like an Islamic Social Entrepreneur” – my own book. It is 95% complete.

I am also blessed to have a Sheikh whom I consult regularly. He guides me, grounds me, and I always ask him to make duʿāʾ for me and my children. And truly—his duʿāʾ works. I have seen its impact, again and again.

I am just a small person, living at the bottom of the world—in Aotearoa New Zealand—with a life that has been turned upside down. And yet, here I am, sharing the same space with people of great names – famous authors (Professors, Deans, etc), those who work within powerful institutions. Ya Allah – It is unbelievable.

From a very small space in my living room, I connect with global players. Beyond the academic world, I am in constant conversation—every single day—on various business projects with partners across the world.

Alhamdulillah for guidance, opportunities, and barakah. Only with Allah (SWT)’s will.

Here’s the unedited abstract of my Book chapter:

The intersection of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria with the Halal industry signifies a pivotal advancement in sustainable enterprise. This chapter posits that ESG integration constitutes a fundamental synergy with the ethical roots of Halal, which are grounded in Maqasid al-Shariah (Islam’s higher objectives). As the worldwide Halal sector grows toward a multi-trillion-dollar valuation, it encounters heightened expectations from principled consumers and investors. This analysis methodically investigates the implementation of ESG across the Halal ecosystem, addressing ecological stewardship, social justice, and ethical oversight. It highlights convergences and obstacles, offers a structured overview of tactical applications backed by scholarly research, and reviews relevant cases. The conclusion asserts that substantive ESG adoption strengthens Halal integrity, builds brand durability, and generates enduring stakeholder value, thereby establishing the industry as a leader in the global sustainability movement.
